Guild Launch News
DDOS Attack - Started ~9:20pm 1/29
UPDATE: 11:05am 1/30/2010
The DDOS attacks to our system we're nearing 1 gigabyte per second this morning and we took more extreme measures to fight the DDOS attack and took Guild Launch offline. The DDOS attack has subsided for the most part and we have verified that systems are operating normally. We will continue to monitor the situation. This DDOS attack has subsided once and then come back so we will have to keep monitoring.
We very much appreciate your understanding while we deal with this. DDOS attacks are difficult to defend against and take time to mitigate.
If you want to have more information about new releases, system downtime info, beta invites and even t-shirts then follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/guildlaunch
ORIGINAL INFO
At about 9:20pm Guild Launch experienced a Denial of Service attack that led to very very slow page loads. Our network engineers are taking the appropriate steps to alleviate it. However, it may take some time. Bear in mind that furiously reloading pages will just make matters wore. We very much appreciate your patience while we deal with bad neighbors and build a better fence.
Follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/guildlaunch if you would like to be able to get this sort of info first thing and at a place where we can deliver the news even if there is problem with Guild Launch. It's a great resource for all of us. Plus, we give away T-Shirts sometimes... and provide more info than just downtime info (since that's rare anyway) such as Beta invites and requests for feature input.

Not to go into much detail but anything that is being suggested had best be already part of the plan by Guild Launch. Otherwise Id would be recommending removing our website from their control. Having said that, DOS attacks are something that happens to a lot of companies around the world. This is not a reflection on Guild Launch or how they operate. Please have some faith that they are professionals and are dealing with this as best as they can

Just to be clear. A DDOS attack is not the same as a security intrusion. Though security intrusions have been known to coincide with DDOS attacks. What we dealt with overnight appears to have been a large DDOS only. In this type of attack a lot of otherwise normal requests are made in such a way that the system gets overwhelmed. It's not inherently a security risk. It's annoying, it's problematic, and it's hard to fight, but we work through it.
On the general security side all of Guild Launch is behind a firewall. Our files are backed up in real time. Our databases are backed up using a real time system and we perform full backups weekly. Most importantly, we test our backup process regularly by restoring our databases to systems in our development environment to make sure they are valid, complete, and work. We're very well covered on the backups side of things.

A DDOS is like someone throwing snowballs of vary shapes and sizes at your house from outside and you try to catch and analyse each one. Some are small, some are big, some have grit or ice in and it's too much to handle.
A firewall cannot prevent that as it is behind the proverbial front door.

Our Ventrilo servers are in completely different data centers. Is your server in Dallas? If so, there has been a report of return route issue over Layer 3 which is a large backbone provider. The issue isn't something we control. This issue is not on our network at all, so we have to rely on them to fix it. Essentially they broke the internet for some people temporarily. It's completely unrelated to this and they should have it fixed soon.

Our vent server is still reporting problems, DDOS again? It cleared up for a few hours but seeing the problem start up again.
