Sneak Peak Version 2.6 - 5,6,7,8 Who Do We Appreciate?
5,6,7,8 Who Do We Appreciate : Our MEMBERS!
(ok.. I need to lay off the coffee, I admit it)
In version 2.6 we will be releasing a new widget called the "User Recognition Widget". This widget will initially provide 2 pieces of functionality, but we intend for it to expand over time.
Birthdays!!
We loves birthdays, and we bet you do to. My friends like to get me video games... go figure.
1. Users now have the ability to enter their birthdate on their user profile.
2. The widget will show a list with birthdays that occur today, 3 days in the future and 3 days in the past. Not everyone checks the site every day so showing a "rolling week" of birthdays seemed logical.
3. The widget also shows a user configurable number of Birthdays. So, you can tell it to show 3 birthdays or turn it off by setting it to 0. This gives you some visual control.
4. The calendar and day detail pages show all birthdays that occur on that month and day.
New Users
The new user aspect of the User Recognition widget is just that. It shows the most recently signed up users. The widget has two settings:
1. The number of users to show (0 for none at all)
2. The number of days someone is considered "new".
The combo of those two will allow you to tweak the widget's display to show a comfortable number of people. A very active guild may want to only show 3 and consider people new for 1 day. A less active guild may want to consider people new for 7 days show 5 users. It's up to you.
Both the birthday and the new user section of the widget will show a link to the user profile and the date and time they joined as well as their miniature profile image.
We hope you enjoy these new features. We're certainly enjoying writing fun features like this one.
Enjoy!

One thing I HIGHLY recommend...some (women, ahem) seem to take offense to knowing their age...so make sure the year can be either left blank or optional...
I tried a bunch of birthday blocks in the past with previous sites and the only ones that have ever gotten any use are the ones that let you put in the birthday but not the year/age...
Love the idea though!

The year will not be shown and we make that very clear on the page where you input the date.

Only if there are birthdays. The widget contains birthdays and new users, if there are none of both the widget won't display at all. None of our widgets display if there is no data, except the last forum posts widget.

Another question...if there are no birthdays +/- 3 days, does the widget still show or does it only appear if there are actual birthdays within range?

OK, this is not working properly. I just enabled the widget with no birthdays or new users and the title bar is still showing...even through the widget is blank:
