Changes to Bank to Improve Performance and User Experience
Due to user feedack, and some issues that were effecting guilds we have changed our method of retrieving items stats data. Some users were experiencing very very slow bank item updates.
This was because if neither Thottbot nor Allakhazam had info on an item in your bank. That item was taking 30 seconds to time out on both Allakhazam and Thottbot, not leaving much more time for the items that were found. Some other items were taking a while longer on the external sites for whatever reason, eventually causing our Guild Bank script to error because the script had taken too long.
This was all because we were automatically searching Thottbot and Allkhazam for item info when you upload the bank.
I've changed the way we get item data. The method we are employing now will make it so that item data is not automatically retrieved. If you see a red question mark or a grey item in your bank or anywhere else on the site where you upload items stats info, you can click it to update the item and add the item to our item cache in the Guild Launch database.
Yes, it is an extra step for some items, but it also means you can more quickly add items to your bank, with less chance of error and the page won't lag for a long time waiting to get data on a bunch of new items. Your experience overall with the bank should be improved by this change, even with the extra click.
Our item cache is still building but soon we'll have a solid cache of most of the important WoW items and you won't have to click on them anymore to load the cache. Also, if someone else on the site uploads an item and updates the cache then it will show on your site with no clicks since everyone shares an item cache.
Enjoy!
