Request for Input: Introduction of "Role" Display
I've been tossing around something in my head and I wanted to get the user community's take on this. What I've been considering is that Member ranks are in many ways superfluous, they don't convey any actual abilities and don't provide any specific info about what a user can do on the site. So.... what I've been considering is to either remove or deemphasize member ranks and to instead replace them with User "Roles", the Roles would essentially be a display of their Site Admin status, and the permissions a user has based on permission groups. The major hurdle is that where Ranks are one line, a user can be a member of multiple permissions groups, so this would end up being a part of their profile and couldn't be boiled down to one line like ranks can.
Any thoughts?
-Stephen
UPDATE:
After some discussion it seems that users do not feel that Member Ranks are superflous, but they would also like to see some display of either more ranks or roles. So, we're going to explore that avenue some.

We've added specific extra ranks to give people their title on the forums.
You could add more available ranks outside of the number offered for the various games to accommodate further use of this or similar practices.
That way it can be boiled down to one line and it wont interfere w/ rosters and the like.
You could still add an information box in their profile that includes some security group information and what not.

If you do this, I would ask that you give us the ability to choose.
In the WGS, we change the ranks in any game that will allow it to be the same as the ranks of the organization, as our rank structure follows suit through all the games we play.
SL
ASL
Council
NV-Council
Marshal (sometimes also Branch Leader[all BL must be rank of Marshal to qualify])
Veteran (sometimes also Branch assistant leader or Branch Officer)
Branch member
Proby
As you can see, none of these describe what the members can do permission wise, but by looking at our Code of Ethics, each member knows what powers those people have.

Thats not completely true. In my guild ranks denote who gets chosen to go to raids. I find it quite handy having them on the sign ups. All this could be solved if you just gave us special forum ranks unstead
I like this idea. No one really cares about guild ranks except in game.
but in game we are limited on notes and many guilds have specific uses for the notes.
here on GL id love to see things like
Guild Crafter Xcraft
Class Leader
Banker
Recruitment Officer
etc etc

We are specifically talking about *Member* ranks here, not character ranks which are the ones that show on signups. You're talking about a different aspect of this feature.

Peoples roles can be put in special ranks. The thought of having
Woothdye
Admin
Officer
Staff
Member
Initiate
and the an avatar under my name just seems silly to me.
Maybe I have what you are trying to say wrong. Wouldn't surprise me as I've had a migraine on and off for 5 days now
A special forum rank (call it what you will) should enable us to create a special rank say for recruiters/raid leaders or we could put things like crafting or whatever in there. If you could allow us to display more than one special rank for people that would be cool as well. So it would be
Woothdye
Admin
Queen Bitch
Alchemy (Pot Spec)
Herb
Maybe I'm just all confused

Question: how different is this from what I'm already doing. I assign member ranks with created ranks to denote their role. So I have recruitment officer, raid leader, admin, etc. It's very easy to create Guild Crafter or such and assign those ranks to my members.
Maybe I'm confused too, but what I personally would like to see is something like what Woothdye is talking about.
For example, we have officers in our guild and some also have special responsibilities such as class offiers.
So it would be nice to see:
Jiyambi
Brewmaster
Rogue Class Leader
So being able to give people multiple "ranks" of whatever you chose would definitely be nice. People can chose to have them just be the in-game rank or not.
Something I have also been wishing for some time is that we could have these ranks be set automatically based on their characters' highest ranks. With a large guild, it is a royal pain in the ass to go through and set everyone's "member" rank to match their "character" rank every time it changes. Not sure if this is along the same lines or not, just thought I'd mention it.

After hearing the responses above, what I'm hearing is that people are using ranks both as we intended them and for other things, which basically means ranks need to stay as they are.
So, my plan is to add some more permission oriented "roles" info to the Members page or profiles, not sure which.

This, in essence, is in 4.8 though I'm not sure how it handles a user who has characters of varying ranks. Hmm....

only problem i have with what others are talking about is its for the FORUM.
character ranks are what get carried over to the raid signup page and THAT is where id like to have options. Name-Actual Rank-OPTIONAL NOTE
the forum ranks are easy to setup and tbo, ill bet most guilds dont even see them or notice. I know for my guild i tend to change mine now and again and award in game prizes for those who actually notice a change..same for sigs.
this tells me whos really online and participating vs just bookmarking the signup page and not knowing whats going on in guild discussions.
