Site Performance - Hardware Upgrades - Database and Sigs
Greetings Everyone,
Guild Launch experienced our largest ever concurrent logged in users yesterday during the WoW downtime. We took this as a wonderful oppurtunity to monitor and analyze the site and it's performance under peak concurrent load. Some of you may have noticed that some sites responded poorly after about 4:00pm yesterday until about 5:30.
Our monitoring and analysis led us to find some key performance bottlenecks and we worked on the solutions and implemented enhancements yesterday afternoon. The end result is better performance all around and better load handling. The crest of the maximum logins was actually later in the evening when WoW continued to be down. However, at that time Guild Launch was responding well due to our changes earlier in the day.
Guild Launch is an ever growing community and we're dedicated to providing the best possible service we can. To that end I would like to announce some hardware upgrades we have in progess:
Sigs, Advertising, VSpy Server
We are planning to have the Sigs, Advertising, and VSpy server load balanced by the end of the week. This will essentially double the capacity of these services and allow us to make more upgrades and enhancements to the signature service over time. We will announce a firm date when we know it, but we're still finishing the final configuration of the new hardware. Those services may experience a short (10 minute or so) downtime while we turn on the new hardware.
Guild Launch Primary Database Hardware
In addition, we are planning an upgrade to some of our primary database hardware for October 29th, 2008. The date may change but that is our current ETA.
For this upgrade we will start the weekly maintenance an hour earlier and it will run a bit longer while the new hardware is brought online. We will also be testing the new hardware with test data over the next few weeks.
The end result of all of this is more performance and more capability in the system letting us focus on growing the feature set, enhancing the product and allowing you to Play more and manage your site less.
Enjoy!
Stephen
