Confirmation Emails to Hotmail Accounts - Delayed & Miss
We have been receiving an increased number of reports that confirmation emails are not being received by users. Email is not a guaranteed delivery mechanism, so a certain number of "misses" is expected.
In this case however, the number is relatively large and seems to be mostly effecting users with Hotmail accounts. We're looking into issues with Hotmail and we suspect that Hotmail is having issues or delays due to their migration to the Windows Live platform. Some of our personal emails took as much as 6 hours to be received on our own hotmail accounts.
We believe the issue lies with Hotmail, but we will keep digging and see what we can do about it.

More often than not, when sending to most public mail servers they do a reverse dns lookup on the ip of the sending mail server in the smtp header. If the ip of the sending mail server is not a valid mx record of a valid domain they reject it as spam.
May not be your issue.... maybe it is.

There are other issues involved when sending to online readers, but most of them deal with how they parse the email.

This is not the case here. Emails are not being summarily rejected by Hotmail. They sometimes get through and sometimes get delayed, and sometimes disappear. Our logs show that in most cases Hotmail is receiving them and accepting them, but those people are either never receiving them or they are showing up HOURS later. Thanks for the info though.
