Karma System - Request for Input
Greetings,
We are currently speccing out a guild Karma system and would like your input into what you would like to see. The general outline of the functionality is below:
1. The Karma system will be optional. When enabled a Karma meter for the guild will appear on the users profile, as an optional column ont he Members list, and below their rank on their posts.
2. The image below their rank will be a thin, short line/image of sort indicating their Karma.
3. Users will be able to, initially, award Karma from user's posts. We are open to feedback on other areas that a user can award, receive karma.
4. A new widget listing the highest Karma individuals will be available.
5. Admins will have a "super karma grant" button they can use periodically (once a week?) but will not have direct editability of Karma. We want the system to be organic. We already have a rank system which allows for Admins to grant indicators of a person's performance directly.
6. The Karma syste, initially, will not award rights. It's purely informational. However, we are open to input as to how the system might evolve. Such as restricting image posting, video posting, etc. until a certain Karma level is achieved.
Any other input is very much appreciated. Providing relative importance of your feedback would be great.

I <3 Karma systems!
I ran the mod in game for a while, but it seemed to bork up recently, and it was self moderated (i.e. didn't sync or use multiple sources)
"The image below their rank will be a thin, short line/image of sort indicating their Karma. "
Will this be used in conjunction with the # of postings/ ranking system? or, replacing?

In conjunction, but definitely seperate. Ultimately you have a choice as to how much or how little of that cluster of functionality to use, and thus how much info is on the left of forum post.

Hi Stephen,
This is the kind of thing I've been hoping for for quite a while, as I'm sure you remember.
I only have two comments. Regarding #5, I'm wonder if this could and would be abused. The big problem with so many guilds is favoritism. I think allowing admins to grant karma would only encourage some idiots to abuse it.
Finally, any plans to incorporate comment voting on the forums, like on WoWhead.com? That would be a really valuable feature - and no, not a separate issue, as I see it, every positive vote would add to your karma rating. Just a thought.
Regards,
Ror

Rorax,
One thing that informs our decisions here is that Guild Sites are inherently a more insular community than a truly open forum. Guilds are more of a close knit community, and they have a presiding power: the admin. This may not be as true in your style of guild, where it is a more open community. I think we can get there from here, with smaller steps though.
The first idea makes me shy away from a WoWhead style system that allows users to place comments in a "bucket" and more to a system that is informative, than decalrative. At least initially.
In other words a system that informs the user that the source of the info is highly regarded as opposed to a system that allows people to declare a post as worth less than another. Karma when attached to a person sums community input over a long history, individual post based systems have their place without a doubt, but I'd prefer to defer that style of group moderation to another time. These two can be layered to confer the fact that a poster is sometimes highly regarded, but laid an egg on a particular post. That being said, karma will flow, in the initial implementation, from individual post rankings. I would just like to not grey out or remove a post based on it's ranking until we tune the system a bit.
Also, we have some post based features that are simple, but powerful that I'm keeping under wraps.
As far as granting Karma bumps, you are right that it could be abused. I'll have to think on that a bit. It seems to me that admins or moderators should have a way to super moderate karma, without outright being able to set it to a value. This ability exists in other karma systems in more democratic ways (re-rating of moderation on slashdot comes to mind). In trying to keep things simple, since we're not building our site around commenting like a Slashdot or similar site it seems appropriate that Admins would have some small way to shape karma even if it is just a bit.
