Guild Launch News
ANNOUNCE: Server Downtime and Server Move
Greetings everyone,
Tomorrow marks the culmination of our server move to the new server hardware. Most of you won't notice anything has happened, but the new hardware will give us more room for growth and a more efficient upgrade path as we continue to grow. Which means, if you don't notice it, it's a good thing.
Tomorrow at 6:00am Eastern Time we will begin the process of swapping the servers. At 6:00 our normal maintenance downtime will occur and at that time I will kick off the DNS changes. The current server will remain in maintenance mode telling people about the IP changes and where to get more info and the system will be brought back up on the new hardware.
Physically, the server move will take about 15 minutes. The DNS changes necessary to make everyone arrive at the correct servers could take anywhere from 1-24 hours. My expectation is that it will be closer to an hour for most of you and maybe a little longer for a very small minority of you.
More info on the IP change is avilable here:

We ran our Beta test of Guild Launch Version 3.0 for more than a week on the new hardware and we've actually moved some of our personal sites to the new servers for testing. Even with all of that testing a server move is a big deal and a complicated process, so we appreciate your patience and understanding if some errors are encountered. The most likely errors will relate to file uploads, so if you see anything of that sort please let us know. Again, I don't expect any trouble and we're doing and have done everything in our power to keep trouble away.
This move has been planned and in the implementation process over multiple phases for over two months now. It started with the database move which went very well, and we've been telling everyone about it as often as we can.
So, for those of you in the U.S., sleep in a little late tomorrow. Maybe read the paper in the morning instead of checking your guild site and we'll have the servers back up and humming before you realize they were down. Then we can move on to keep kicking out even more of those features you love while bringing you the most stable, best performing, most feature rich Guild Hosting available.
Enjoy!
Stephen

I could put level 400, but that would be just as made up as the level 12. I don't even play Lotro any more and I never had a Hobbit burglar.

UPDATE: 12/10/2007 8:20am
The server move is now complete at a physical level. It appears that some DNS servers are taking a bit more time to update, but that is out of our control. We'll have to wait them out, but I expect them to update within the hour.
Let us know if you see any issues, especially with file uploads or even "page not found" errors. We don't expect any issues and are in the process of doing final checks ourselves and have not yet seen any issues.
Enjoy!

Going on 3.5 now and still having to use the default URL...but I let our guild know in advance. Hopefully the new changes will take effect soon enough...

DNS propagation times are almost completely out of our control, but I can see your site now and you can get to this site so I would expect it to be relatively soon.
DNS propagation is frustrating because there is very little we can do to speed it. I appreciate you all's patience.

i still cant reach my site, you know any time it will be back?

Actually, there is.
When there is about to happen IP change, you should lower TTL for DNS entries to let's say 5 minutes (this needs to be done atleast 24 hours prior to change), so after IP change DNS changes are propagated fast.
After upgrade/change is done, you can put TTL in DNS entries back to default values (usually 1 day).

Yes, thank you we know about TTL. GuildLaunch.com has updated for nearly everyone already. Still, there isn't anything we can do once the process starts. Not everyone honors TTLs. We do everything we can to make it quick, then it's out of our control in the end.

Damn, beat me to it. I like to do my TTL changes 48 hours in advance though, as some Binds servers will cache for that long, or longer. All depends on how the admin has it set up. It just makes your dns server a lot busier for a short period of time. But the "downtime" is a LOT less.

Grrr, I called at 6:00 am to have our registrar make the changes and 7 hours later still wasn't getting through. WHOIS was STILL showing the old IP so I called them...and they wonder why we switched hosting services. The a-holes didn't change the A Record like they said they would. Literally 15 minutes on the nose later the changes were in effect and working
Can't wait until March when I'm able to switch over to a new registrar since they won't release our name until it's almost ready to expire...
