Site Chat Updates - Open Beta Status
On Thursday 10/28, we released site chat via Stribe. We've received good feedback already and I expect that we will receive more!
Please consider the Stribe chat to be in Open Beta and we will probably reset all of the chats in a day or two with updates and changes in behavior.
At this time please consider the Stribe chat to be in Open Beta. We expect that some will love it, some will dislike it. With any significant functionality this is true. We just ask that you keep an open mind and explore the functionality.
There are a few issues outstanding:
Stribe is working with us to track these down and we will have them resolved soon.
1. Sometimes the chat area is blank.
2. Private person-to-person chats are not showing text
3. There are login issues for some users and issues if you log out and try to log back in
Resolved Issues
1. There is no longer incorrect cross talk amongst the communities
We appreciate your feedback and we look forward to bringing you an awesome chat integration that goes beyond standard chat and provides for some very cool additional functionality over the typical site chat, while also providing the core functionality you are looking for. The fact is that Stribe provides a strong foundation for our chat and the company is dedicated to making it work for us and they are a strong partner that brings a lot of functionality to the table.
FAQs
Q. How do I enable the chat?
A. Go to Admin -> Content Tab - Site Chat and you can enable it there. For the softest transition I suggest putting it only on the chat page, then adding the chat link to your navigation.
Q. Is the site chat truly private?
A. It is hidden, but not truly private. Truly private chats for groups are on Stribe's roadmap and just weren't available at launch.
Q. This seems like a status post, not chat?
A. A chat provides the ability for two users to talk in real time. Stribe provides that and much more. It is true that this has some elements of a Status message. The most obvious is that when you login you see previous messages in the community. We believe this is an advantage and not a detriment. The core chat functionality is there, but you have other options as well, such as the ability to reply to a single message.
Q. I can't hit enter to post!
A. We know, and we're working with Stribe on that. They have not confirmed whether it is possible yet.

Stephen -
First, thank you. You guys put out a great product, we're glad to be part of it.
I'm having difficulty in getting the Stribe chat to go to it's own page. The link that is present flashes like the application is going to load but never does. Is this the bug you're referring to with known issue #1?
We're not having any struggles with the sidebar version outside if its width. But I'd like to move it to it's own page if possible.
I've tried this on Windows XP, IE 8.0.7600 and Firefox 3.6.12 with the same behavior.
I did ensure that in Firefox that external addons were not blocking it such as AdBlock.
While I do not have it as a public display, if you need to take a look we're at http://katanasedge.guildlaunch.com.
Thanks for any guidance.

Keligh,
I'm glad that you like it. THe issue with the chat being on it's own page and not displaying is indeed the issue in #1. Stribe is working on a fix. We'll definitely update everyone when it is fixed.
Thanks!

Gelidar,
Thanks for the feedback. If the chat is open and tall on the right and you dont want it there then use the get down arrows on the right to minimize it. That option will persist from page to page.

Gelidar, it looks like there is an issue on your site specifically though with the chat misbehaving. That is why we are in an open beta status, so we can work through these issues. I will check it out.

I do appreciate the effort in developing this chat, but I'm afraid that it will not do us much good except as a sort of question and answer board for guilds perhaps. We already have such a widget though: Shoutbox.
As I've written in other posts I think this is very much similar to twitter and facebook. People have been asking for a group/guild chat for a long time. A place where they can privately "talk" with each other in a simple way, and see who they are talking to. This solution fails at most of this things.
1. We need one simple line of text for each response. Not with links for Reply, Like, More and this, in my opinion, pointless points and badges. Who asked really asked for that? Please consider posting each line like this: | Profile picture | Name (8 hours ago): Text text text text. It will be a lot more clean, and suddenly it feels like an actual chat.
2. The chat as a frame on the right side can work, but it can be annoying to have this updated every time you hit another link on the portal. People are much more used solutions which have a widget on the portal it self. Consider adding a way to get tis widget in it's own window, so you can have it on another screen.
3. When people are in this chat window or the chat widget on the portal, they should be able to see which users is actively on the chat.
4. You should be able to delete or all previous conversations for new people who enters the chat. So you're not risking to talking a bit bad about someone, and then they enter chat and reads all about it.
5. This system will never ever feel like a real time group/guild chat because you have to "post" your messages. Why can you not simply use enter? ALL other chat programs I've used uses enter. Who needs enter for formatting in a chat?
6. People have to be able to block the popups. I just want to use the widget, so I don't want popups when I'm not looking at the widget/chat box. Others might prefer the chat in the right frame, and want to have the popups to be notified when there is activity. Anyhow, this should be user controlled.
I'm sorry to sound so negative, but I can't really help it. I think this is just so far away from what people really wanted. For now I'll have to hold on to the terrible chat from guildportal This one actually works like a chat, even though it have numerous of bugs and shortcomings.

Here is the screenie I was asked to provide. What my guildmembers are reporting is that the first pop up, "welcome to our community" is constantly poping up for those who have opted out of signing up for Stribe. If they close the pop up, it pops back up again upon going from one section of the website to another.
Huthur, thanks for the feedback. We're working to refine the interface a bit. As you know, our goal was to integrate something that provided more than standard chat. The vast majority of site chats go woefully unused and we wanted to introduce something original.
As one point of clarification, you, as an Admin can move Stribe to a dedicated page. Then users can open that page separately, will not see popups, etc. unless they choose to do so.
Stribe has been a great partner to get there while also providing core chat functionality. It may not feel like a chat to you, but the core functionality *is* there. We may have to bridge the gap between the functionality we have and some of the interface desires and we'll work to close that gap.
As it is now, I'm not sure of timelines for Stribe updates, but they should come pretty quickly. If you don't like Stribe you have the same functionality you had before we released it since we've only added something to the mix. I appreciate the feedback and I can appreciate that it won't meet some user's needs at this time.

At this time users cannot opt out. They shouldn't get the popup multple times in one session though. If you want users to be able to choose whether to see the chat or not move the chat to a dedicated page (in the options) then add the chat page.
