Finally we get the chat that everyone wanted! Not this twitter lookalike that gamers do not care much about. It'll be a joy to drop the other external chat clients we use.
So, when are you looking for live release? We've tested it some, and it looks solid enough. It's fast, and it does what it should do. Only thing missing might be some icons.
There are a couple of small concerns I have. If everyone logging on to the main page of our portal, will they be logged into this chat as well? If we can add it directly to the page as a widget that is.
And what about previous chat messages. Can people that log in see them? If we're talking about a person that is not logged in, we'd like this messages to stay hidden for the newly logged on user. This might be a privacy concern. For example: Officer discussions that should not be seen by others.
What would be really good is if you could add the ability to add the groups that is created under the Permission tabs. So we could talk privately with certain members. Just a way to set "add this group to chat option". So we could have chat for all members, council members and officers as a few examples. That would be top notch. Also private one-to-one chat would be great.

Huthur, I'm glad you like it. The other chat went over like a lead balloon so we adjusted.
Our focus right now is on getting core chat functionality in place and making sure it works at scale. Then we'll add more nuanced functionality.
To address your concerns:
1. Right now this is only on a dedicated page, we don't have a widget version. A widget version might be doable, but we think the usability is better on a page. It also means the people who show as 'in chat' will actually be 'in chat' and not just cruising by the homepage. I'm not ruling a widget out, I just want to make the on-page version kick ass first.
2. Previous chat messages are not logged and you won't see them when you enter chat. We may be able to add a logging feature, but it would have some kind of indicator.
Things definitely on the horizon:
1. Basic Emoticons - we'll add a fun set of emoticons for use
2. Channels - what you see now is the default member-only channel. We will add the ability to add a public channel, and channels that only certain permission groups can see.
3. Basic Admin Functions - Temp Mute, Temp Ban
4. Way to assign admins to channels based on permission groups.
Private chat is something we can look into, but is not on the immediate road map.
I've run some tests with Opera. I don't see any issues right off the bat in opera 11.11. Can you provide any specifics about errors that you saw?

Looks awesome so far and I agree with all you intend to include with the release of the chat.
I didn't like the scribe chat at all ;[

I think that most people have been exposed to that word by now. That is about as strong as my language gets in public.

Im using Google Chrome and dont have any complains with the chat.
What I would recommend is a "Settings-panel" visible for Admin users only in which the Chat can be configured.
For example Chat-Admins, new channels, maybe a "Welcome message" that appears to the member that log into the chat.
How are the permissions gonna work with the chat? Will "Chat" just be added into the Permissions column and has to be marked so the set Permission group has Chat-Admin rights?
I still think a Settings-panel on the Chat page that is visible for Admins only is one of the best sollutions and so the Chat would be easy to configure, or the Chat Settings could be added to the Admin-panel aswell.

As long as your not swearing like a trucker like me at times, it's all good... I'm in a joking mood today.

I agree with this. Maybe Stephen can put it in before he goes on vacation.
The site chat is great however I would love to see a feature added where you can hear an audible DING when someone talks so that if you are playing your game and you are on the site it will register that you have people in there. Otherwise its really good
