Guild Launch News
Social Sharing Links
Greetings Everyone,
When we recently launched the top of site social sharing links some users loved it. Some users did not love it. We got quite a few requests for configuration of the sharing links. The top bar doesn't have a lot of room to play with and after launching the options we're not 100% convinced it's the best place for these buttons. This is your site, not Google and/or Faceboook's site, so we went back to the drawing board a bit and made the following changes:
1. The Facebook and G+ buttons are no longer added to new sites by default. If you have it on your site and don't want it it can be removed on the Additional Site Settings page on the Content tab in Admin. If you love it, as many users do, then you don't need to do anything.
2. A New 'Spread the Word' widget has been added and is added to new sites when they are created.
3. This widget can be added from the Social Networking widget group to any site that wants to use it.
The main goal of this widget is to let you get the word out to anyone and everyone who is in your social network who might want to visit your site or become a member. Our goal is to make this part of your recruiting as well as a solid tool for getting existing members signed up and active on your site.
The new 'Spread the Word' widget is similar to the Facebook widget, but includes a G+ button and a ShareThis sharing button that hooks into 100s of sites. This widget is configurable as to which buttons you want to show. In the default state it looks like this:
The ShareThis, G+ and Facebook options can be configured independently.
Enjoy!
Stephen

Oh, you read my mind =) In fact I'd made my own in a HTML widget and spent an hour or two nudging DIVs around pixel by pixel to make it pretty. Your new widget saw me deleting all that work... curse you and your efficient, well-considered and targeted upgrades!
Right now, I'm getting an error on the Google+1 button:

Other than that, it's looking great!

The only problem we'd found with the previous facebook and + widgets is that they seemed to "forget" how many had clicked on them. At one point we had 5 facebook "likes" on both the facebook widget and the one at the top of the page, then the top of the page one went down to only one "like" despite the widget showing 5 - now the widget itself has gone down to one (myself).
I've noticed a similar problem with the +1 button - when it first arrived we had +3, now its back down to only +1.
Does it just "wear off" over time?

There were some variations in the URL we were providing to the buttons. We've standardized them all now and added the OpenGraph support so the pages should actually update on Facebook that were previously liked even if the count doesn't.

Why doesn't my facebook like button show up? I don't see anything for Facebook url to configure and link our pages. I got Twitter up and running just fine. Please let me know what I'm looking past.

Would like to have an option to turn off the Share This Widget in the Guild News section. Any way to do that. It serves no purpose for us as we do not want to share this page with anyone other than our own members. I understand that some users may want that functionality but I would like a choice.
