Guild Launch News
New Status Stream & Follows
Greetings,
Today we have released major improvements to the profile pages and their functionality. These changes make the pages look better and provide key functionality to make them more interesting and informative.
We have cleaned up the main profile pages quite a bit. We have normalized padding, spacing and improved the overall look. We've modified some of the data to not show at all if there is no data to display as opposed to saying "No Data". This was done for items which some users never interact with, such as raiding. In addition, we have updated the site and character lists to display in a less jumbled manner as well as made improvements to the general user data.
We have also changed the 'Friends' feature to a 'Follow' feature. The functionality behaves largely the same, but we prefer the wording of 'Following' to 'Friends' since it entails a more relaxed association more appropriate for our approach.
Lastly and most importantly we've added a new User Activity Stream. This will show system activity for actions performed by you and those that you follow. It will show:
1. New Posts
2. Contest Votes
3. Poll Votes (just the act of voting, not what they voted for)
4. Image Uploads
5. When the user makes a blog post
The goal here is to display publicly visible actions and to encourage sharing and knowledge of those actions more widely. To that end only basic security is applied to the event stream. If your Gallery is member only then only members will see that status. Only posts in publicly visible forums are visible in the stream. Posts made in a private forums will not show here at all.
Right now we only have contest votes enabled while we test out the new system and shake out any kinks. We will turn on more of the activities tomorrow and add more over time.
If you have ideas for other actions that you would like to see tracked then please let us know. Keep in mind that these actions should be fun and informative. This is not intended to be an audit log.
Our goal with this functionality is to give you a better picture of what is happening with your friends and others you associate with on Guild Launch. A widget will be released by the end of the week to show the activity stream for all of the members of your site. This will be excellent for giving you a "What's happening on my site?" view of things.
I hope you enjoy the new functionality!
Enjoy!
Stephen

The shoutbox will be back at the end of the week in the form of the ability to post into the user's Activity stream.

Any chance to make a special tab for the Activity Stream? Its quite annoying to have it on my main profile page.
Also since youre upgrading the whole system now how about to add more Profile Editing features? Like the posibility to change designs, add HTML codes etc. Would be nice.

The activity stream is the central indicator of what you are doing and what people you are following are doing. We don't want to tuck it away in some tab where no one sees it.
I'm not sure what is annoying about an Activity stream, but previously there was only static data there. It was just a list of Guilds and Characters. That data is useful, but it doesn't change much and that info is available in other places. For 99% of users those lists had one guild (the one they were already on) and one, maybe two, characters. Our goal is to make the profile more useful and more interesting.
Your profile now shows what you are "up to" and what the users you are following are up to on Guild Launch. It will show more info as time goes on. The feature isn't completely done yet. I think you will see the utility of it more as we add to it.
In summary, the Activity stream is providing a key reason, and purpose, for users and other users to visit their profile. Given that, we don't want to hide it away somewhere.
We don't have plans for profile customization at this point, though it isn't completely off the table.

Yes, the limit is 10 items. Then pagination buttons appear to the bottom right to see more.

it is not annoying in itself but the fact that the 10 whole things are making my screen scroll IS. Especially when you post pictures.
my reactions below...
1st Activity stream (pic): "oh ok, looks cool"
2nd Activity stream (pic): "its kinda taking up some space..oh well"
3rd Activity stream (post): "I wonder how long this is going"
4-9th Activity stream (post+pic): "WTF =("
Can you please make it so that there is a limit to how much we can choose to show or have an option to turn it off?

D-Meow is there a part of the page you are trying to get to that the scrolling is causing an issue with? I'm just trying to get some more insight into how people are using the profile page. I would like to keep the activity stream as long as possible because we think it is fun info and it will help get people interacting and talking and we have more planned for it that will make it more useful.
So, can you give me some more insight into what you are scrolling down to get to and why? I know it sounds like a silly question, but if the scrolling is an issue... why? What is it keeping you from getting to quickly enough?

I don't intend to necro this post, but i to wonder what can be edited from this activity stream, or if since november has an on/off switch been created.
The example here is i don't mind what it does, i just don't like how it does it. For instance, i used my site for SWTOR but now it is being used for WoW. I have since removed all the content related to SWTOR because it is current on another site.
My profile still shows content related to SWTOR even though that content has since been removed.
I just enjoy a certain amount of anonymity between the use of my online accounts, both of which i still actively play. I tried changing my user name but it doesn't clear the activity stream.
The issue leaves only passing leadership to someone else while i go make a new guildlaunch account in order to clear the cache, or at the very least sever the link between wow and Swtor.
Any other suggestions?
