Why do my staff want to have me sectioned?

i have a problem. Some of my team members are under-performing. I've tried carrot, now it's time for stick.

For some reason they start to cower in fear, and I even had one cry on me when I told them to "meet your benchmarks, or they'll never find your body."

Is that so wrong?
